Raft Guide
Job Summary White-water rafting guides lead groups of people on rafting trips through scenic stretches of river and white-water rapids.
Qualifications We are seeking raft guides with experience in oar and paddle guiding on Class 3 Rivers. Candidates must have a minimum of one season's experience on Class 3 Rivers and hold a current first aid and CPR. Certification. Rescue certification would be an asset. Minimum Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR required, the appropriate level of swimming skill, a valid Class 5 driver's license or a Class 4 license may be required in some situations. White-water rafting guides are trained on the job. In addition to safe rafting and emergency procedures, their training may include information about the history, wildlife and plants of the area in which they will be working.
Responsibilities planning expeditions assembling supplies and equipment prior to departure instructing clients on safe rafting procedures preparing base camps for longer expedition a good knowledge of their field certification in wilderness first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) the knowledge and mechanical skills necessary to maintain their equipment.
Once on the river, white-water rafting guides must: follow a specified route and provide instructions and commentary while steering the raft through a safe but challenging path "read the water" (determine by watching the surface of the river what is going on underneath the surface and how it will affect the raft) handle emergency situations such as a raft caught sideways against a rock, a passenger in the river and/or a punctured raft.
On trips lasting more than a few hours, guides are also responsible for preparing meals, setting up camp and entertaining their groups.
Personal Qualities good social skills excellent canoeing skills outdoor experience. Most employers prefer to hire people who are already trained in rafting, but will consider hiring people who have related experience and a good attitude.
Pay Range From $80.00 to $140.00 per day depending on experience plus some companies offer bonuses (e.g. $ 5 per day bonus) and Staff accommodation at a low cost may be available. White-water rafting guides are self-employed or employed by specialty companies in river rafting. Many outdoor sport and recreation guides work from May to October and find other employment during the winter months. |
